This is the result of a one day project set by visiting tutor Ben Branagan. He asked us to make a publication based on the word 'sequence'. I thought about the Fibonacci sequence and how I might apply it to one of the everyday objects hanging around in the studio. The sequence itself is a cumulative progression where two adjacent numbers added together equals the third ie;

0 + 1 = 1 + 2 = 3 + 5 = 8 + 13 =21 and so on.

and in its true form -

0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 ...

I decided to use the sequence to pick letters from a newspaper so the first two numbers (0 1) became the first word on the front page, (3 5) was the fifth letter of the third page et cetera until I ran out of numbers that fitted with the publication. Which was the 55th word of the 34th page.

This brought to light a sequence of letters, FNEDYREBRH. This I turned into an anagram spelling out 'herd by fern' and interestingly enough the coiled fern is a prime example of a Fibonacci sequence.

Physically the book is made of an A3 sheet cut and folded to create six pages set in three spreads. Due to the time contraints of a day project (and that I really like it) the text is hand applied in Letraset and the layout made by hand also. The books are labeled Zero and One as a nod to the start of the sequence itself and the debate surrounding whether Fibonacci truly does start with a zero.
